Trainer Don Baertschiger looks to have a handy galloper in the shape of Moonlite Shower, a debut winner of the $65,000 Restricted Maiden (2 & 3YO) over 1200m on Sunday.
Ridden by Oscar Chavez, Moonlite Shower led throughout in scoring a two length victory over Biggest Chief (Saimee Jumaat) with Hush Hush (Robbie Fradd), a stablemate of the winner, a half-length away third.
Baertschiger parted with A$110,000 to secure Moonlite Shower at the Two-Year-Old Ready To Run Sale on the Gold Coast last year.
The gelding is a half-brother to a former handy middle distance performer Don’t Tell Clang who won the Adrian Knox Stakes at Randwick in 2001.
“I was in Sydney for the Easter Sales one year and happened to back this horse’s half-sister who won a Group 3 race at Randwick,” said Baertschiger.
“That stuck in my mind and when this horses was up for sale I liked what I saw.
“He’s gone about his business nicely since he’s been here and his trials had been good leading up to this race.
“He’s only a little fella but he’s done a good job.”
Baertschiger said Moonlite Shower’s size, or rather lack of it, is likely to count against the three-year-old in the long run.
Moonlite Shower weighed-in at just 431kg for his debut performance.
“The thing with this bloke is that he can gallop,” said Baertschiger. “We’ll just wait and see what happens with him.
“I just hope he keeps improving and at some stage we can get a bit a weight on him.”
Moonlite Shower is a three-year-old gelding by Hidden Dragon from the Black Zephyr mare Donnatelle and is owned by the Spirit Nature Stable.
