Trainer Dr Yeoh Kheng Chye made an overdue visit to the winner's circle when Danzig Rocket took out the $55,000 Huat Chai Handicap over 1000m on the Polytrack on Sunday.

It was just Dr Yeoh's second visit to the winner's circle for the year having previously tasted success with Merlin back on January 6.

Ridden by 4kg claiming apprentice Dennis Oon, Danzig Rocket scored a three-quarter length win over BM Win (Brethem Tai) with Irish Lightning (Barend Vorster) a half-length away third.

Danzig Rocket (Dennis Oon, yellow cap) bursts through to claim Race 3.

The time was 59.59 secs, the fastest of the three 1000m races that opened racing on Sunday.

The pace was quite hectic early with Blue Seven (Ivaldo Santana) leading the way over Mordi (Stephen Baster) and Irish Lightning with Danzig Rocket tucked away in fourth spot.

On turning for home Blue Seven skipped away and with 200m to run looked all set for victory, but being first-up from a seven month spell began to tire and the field swooped.

Oon was able to work through and into the clear and with 100m to run claimed the leader before holding off the chasing pack.

"The 4kg claim helped him a lot today," said Dr Yeoh. "It was a cool ride by the boy who settled the horse well behind the pace and brought him home with a strong finish."

"It proved today that he doesn't have to go to the front to win his races. He finished it off nicely."

Danzig Rocket pulled-up with respiratory distress when a fading 11th back in December before resuming with a fourth behind the smart Popi Popi on Februay 5.

"He was in need of a rest and he was fitter for his run last time," said Dr Yeoh. "He also was down in class which helped him also."

Although just recording two wins from his previous 15 starts, Danzig Rocket had proven to be a model of consistency with seven minor placings.

A four-year-old by Hidden Dragon from the Danzig Connection mare Danzig's Strike, Danzig Rocket has won more than $160,000 in prizemoney for his connections - the Danzig Rocket Stable.
