Lyndhurst Stud horses have been racing in outstanding form of late and in recent weeks we have cheered on five stakes winners - including the Gr.2 Villiers Stakes winner All Legal.
Bred by long time Lyndhurst supporter Doug Newberry of Access Bloodstock and raised at the farm, All Legal has proven a great buy for the Kevin Moses stable - the son of Al Maher fetching $25,000 at the 2008 William Inglis Classic Yearling Sale and, as the winner of six of his 33 starts he has amassed not far short of $600,000 in stakes.
Already a Listed winner at Hawkesbury in early November, All Legal has been in great form this preparation and he overcame trouble in running to claim the Villiers.
"We didn't have much of a run," said jockey Glyn Schofield - "but he grabbed the prize late."
Schofield reported that he had felt confident before the horses had even left the mounting yard – “the horse was bubbling!" he enthused - "Kevin and Jenny turned him out in fantastic order, he was spot-on.”
The victory was a particularly satisfying one for the Moses stable, the trainer being told by a vet not too long ago that All Legal should be put down.
“He had five bone chips and the vet said that he’d never race again.”
Consulting another vet, Moses gave the go-ahead for an operation and the horse has thrived since.
“Always get a second opinion!” he laughed, adding that All Legal is “very tiny but he tries hard.”
The win was also a well earned one for Jenny Moses who sported a black eye as she accepted the Villiers trophy - All Legal having raised his knee into her face as she was checking his feet after trackwork.
"Let's just say we are friends again!" she joked after the race.
Having also ridden a Villiers winner (King's Ideal in 1979), Moses was pleased to win the feature, saying that "this win means more to me because training them is a lot harder than riding them!"
A GREAT BLACK-TYPE RUN FOR LYNDHURST STUD!
